03/11.2015 Pat Baker Writes: Doug Smith, an old friend and colleague at Gloucester Chess Club has recently died. I would be grateful if you could circulate this brief obituary from his son, Geoff, so that people know of his passing.
Doug Smith died on 28th October, 2015, aged 81. Chess remained a fascination and joy for his whole life, and he made many friends at his local clubs in Bourne End, Slough, and Gloucester. He played at club and county level, and had as his particular interest in the last 20 years the Blackmar Diemer Gambit. He was an early adopter of computer chess and enjoyed playing postal games with people from all around the world. It is with great sadness that he is no longer with us.

I am sorry to report that Malcolm Wootton, Forest of Dean's longest serving member, died of a heart attack on 8th November. I am grateful to Ray Francis who informed me of the sad news. His cheerful attitude and enthusiasm for the game will be missed in the league. Malcolm's family have confirmed that the funeral will take place at the Gloucester Crematorium at 1530hrs on Wednesday 03 December 2014 and a buffet will follow at the Great Western where Malcolm used to wine and dine regularly. Jeannette and Pete (brother and sister-in-law) are handling the arrangements and would appreciate some idea of "numbers" so please let Ian Jenkins know if you are able to attend and he shall link up with Jeannette. Malcolm was well known to the chess community and was at least once the Chair of the League (when it was Forest of Dean's turn).

More Sad News for the league:
Ian Ponter sadly passed away on Sunday 1st December 2013 aged 41. Ian was educated in Gloucester and lived in Cheltenham. He played chess for Gloucester and later for Downend, Bristol and represented his county of Gloucestershire. He won the Major section at Frome in 2012 but had been in poor health for some years. Ian joined several of his friends at golf during many Paignton Chess Congresses. Ian will be sadly missed by his many friends.

13/06/13: Sad news for the league, as two longstanding members have recently died, obituaries below:
I am very sorry to report that Ron Powis passed away on June 12th. I am grateful to Rob Wilden who informed of the sad news. John Harris reports Ron was a member of Stroud Chess Club for over 50 years and was a pillar of local chess. This year was the first Cotswold Congress at which he did not afficiate since 1967. We will miss him massively. May he rest in peace. Funeral is Monday 24th June @11am at St. Pauls Church, Whiteshill (Stroud)

I am sorry to inform you that Jesse Lord passed away yesterday. I am grateful to John Jones (Wotton Hall) for passing on the sad news. Jesse was in the original team of Upton St.Leonards (now moved to Wotton Hall ) in 2001. He was also a member of Gloucester Chess Club for a great many years. Many of his chess friends would not know that he was very keen on ballroom dancing. He will be sadly missed at chess evenings and tea dances. Jesse's funeral will be next Monday 17th June, 11.00 am at Upton St.Leonards Church, Upton St.Leonards. Many thanks to John Jones for the details. May he rest in peace.
